Wanting to welt

I'm wanting to welt:

Wanting to learn how to welt may seem to fall chronologically out of place in regards to skill set if you've just read my 'about me' section. Let me fill you in a bit though.  I have completed three men's shirts (will post more about those later) and would like to move on to a new project. I bought the new BURDA 7142 pattern so I could make myself a coat:

I like the red one!

I felt this coat would be a nice project to tackle and it says it's AVERAGE difficulty on the pattern sleeve.  I also thought that I shouldn’t wait too long to tackle it as I know the warmish weather here in the UK isn’t going to hold out for much longer.  There are a few techniques I need to be able to do well in order to complete this coat:

 ·   raglan sleeves (apparently lots easier than set in sleeves)
·    making and inserting a full lining (I’ve only previously lined a skirt)
·    WELT POCKETS (I’ve never done a welt pocket)

My first attempt at welt pockets has not come out so well as you can see in the pictures below:

What have I done wrong??

I've used directions I found on another pattern.  It first gets you to sew a reinforcment stitch along the pocket lines.  That seemed easy enough.  Then it asks you to fold the welts in half and place them over the pocket lines so their raw edges meet.  As I continued to read the instructions I thought to myself 'this is going to be easy.'  I then basted my welts and placed my pocket piece over the welts and basted that as well.  I was now ready to slash the pocket.  The pattern direction says that you need to be careful not to slash the welts, so I was careful and didn't slash them.

It keept mentioning matching up the small dots at the corner.  I have looked at the welt pattern piece a few times and only see two small dots.  The directions show four, one in each corner.  Where are they?

PLEASE HELP!
What might I have done wrong?
Is there an easy, fool proof way to do a welt?
